Adrafinil Review: Is it Legal? Where to Buy Online?

Adrafinil

A Little Introduction

Adrafinil is a synthetic wakefulness-promoting drug - aka eugeroic - that was developed by French scientists in the 70's. The main objective of the drug was to improve wakefulness, attention, mood and productivity in patients with certain neurological and sleeping disorders.

But today, this drug is widely used off-label by healthy people to promote vigilance, mental performance and productivity. It has become one of the most popular nootropics used by men and women.

Up until Sep 2011, adrafinil was marketed under the brand name Olmifon, which is now discontinued. Generic adrafinil can still be found in powder and capsule form at many online and local supplement stores (see my recommendation below).

Legal Status

In the US and worldwide, adrafinil is an unscheduled/unregulated substance. That means you can buy it over-the-counter without a prescription. So, yes, adrafinil is a legal drug to buy and use in the US and other countries.

It is worth noting that the World Anti-Doping Agency has banned athletes from using adrafinil in competition due to its stimulatory effect.

Adrafinil vs. Modafinil

Both adrafinil and modafinil have the same effect in the body. In fact, adrafinil is a prodrug for modafinil, which means after adrafinil is consumed it gets metabolized and converted into its active metabolite; modafinil.

Modafinil is also used as a drug on its own, and it is approved by the FDA for the treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness, narcolepsy, and other mental disorders. But unlike adrafinil, modafinil is a prescription-only drug that is marketed under different brand names including Provigil, Alertec, Modavigil, and others.

While modafinil is mostly prescribed for serious health conditions, adrafinil is more commonly used as a recreational drug.

In terms of efficacy, adrafinil is weaker than modafinil. But on the positive side, it has much less side effects and it's safer than modafinil, making it a better first choice.

Recommended Dosage

The standard daily dose of adrafinil for adults is between 150mg and 300mg.

If you are a new user, start with a 150mg dose. If you don't notice any effect after a few days, increase it to 300mg daily. If that doesn't work for you, you can increase the dosage up to 600mg a day.

Higher doses in the 900-1,200mg range have also been used for certain conditions, but it's not recommended to exceed 600mg daily without consulting with a doctor.

Adrafinil works best when taken on an empty stomach or with a light meal. Most users take it 3-4 times a week.

Safety and Side Effects

Adrafinil is generally safe for adult men and women. The following are some of the more commonly reported side effects:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Insomnia

Because adrafinil is metabolized in the liver, there are some concerns about liver damage following prolonged consumption. While there is no clinical data to prove or disprove this, it is not recommended to take this drug for more than 6 months.

Do not take adrafinil if you have liver problems as it may worsen the condition.

Where to Buy Adrafinil Online?
